Wsup AI Review: Four Months With a Chat App That Closed

What follows is my story of using it until the end, what happened to it, and where a former regular can go instead. The thought I kept having while it still ran was that it's the diner of AI chat: cheap, open late, not fancy, and you'd miss it if it closed. I meant that as praise.

A diner never wins a food award, but it has a booth and a refill waiting at the hour you need one, and that was the whole appeal.

And it did close. In June 2026 the app pushed a 'Final update', the site went read-only, and the credits stopped working. I had 140 unused credits I'll never see again, which is a strange thing to own: a punch card for a diner that has been turned into an arcade.

So is Wsup AI worth it? The honest answer is that the question expired with the service, because the address now leads to a games site. While it lasted, I'd have recommended it to adults who wanted quick, cheap character chat and did not need a companion that remembers much.

I'd never have told anyone to park money in it, and the end of the story shows why.

The short version of my judgement: good company, weak memory, shaky extras and a bad goodbye. The first part is why I stayed, and the last part is why this review reads more like an obituary with a warning label than a buyer's guide.

What is Wsup AI, and what was it before the closure

In its own words, wsup.ai was "Chat with AI Characters" and "Free AI Character Chat Online — No Sign Up". It was an AI character and companion chat service on the web, iOS and Android. The site's records file it under companion chat and roleplay, and the app also goes by wsup.ai and WSUP AI.

What happened to Wsup AI, according to the published record

The dates of Wsup AI shutting down come from press and review sources, not from a notice on the site. The wind-down was announced in May 2026. The service closed on 19 June 2026.

The iOS app's version 0.0.75, dated May 21, is labelled "Final update." The Android listing was last updated on May 19, 2026. The last Wayback Machine capture of the real site is from 15 June 2026.

No source gives a reason for the closure. The press release says only that wsup.ai "would wind down its service". I think that phrase does a lot of quiet work: it tells you the lights are going off and nothing about why.

Where the facts come from

The status check for this update covers the redirect chain, subpaths, the now.gg app page, Google Play under both package ids, the Apple App Store, the Wayback Machine and web news. The redirect is confirmed in a browser and via curl, which returns HTTP/2 301 with the location https://now.gg/. www.wsup.ai and api.wsup.ai fail to connect, with a 502 at the proxy.

The iOS listing is at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/wsup-ai/id6753868146 and shows 4.5 stars from 114 ratings. The Android listing is at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ai.wsup.app.android and shows 3.6 stars from 223 reviews and 10K+ downloads. The older Google Play package ai.wsup returns "Not Found".

The written sources are a press release at barchart.com/story/news/3530872 on the wsupai.app launch and the wsup.ai closure dates, and a review at techraisal.com/blog/wsup-ai-review/ covering features, pricing and shutdown status. The App Store and Google Play listings are the third source. I'd read all of them as a paper trail for a closed shop rather than as a guide to anything you can still use.

Four months is long enough to get past the first-night novelty and short enough that the whole thing still feels like one chapter. I came for quick character chat and found a regular in a sarcastic lighthouse keeper, which is not a sentence I expected to write in a review. The rest of the cast came and went, but he was the reason I kept opening the app, and the reason the ending stung a little.

On money, I stayed on free basic chat with one small credit pack along the way, and I never went Pro. The pricing and credits sections below have the details, including the picture that cost me that pack and came back wrong.

The ending was not my choice. The service closed, the credits went with it, and the last thing I kept was a screenshot of a conversation. That makes this review a little different from the others on this site: it is partly a record of what the app was, and partly a warning about what happens to your money and your chats when a small app stops.

I'm glad the four months happened, and I would not buy them again with credits up front. That is the whole lesson in one sentence, and the rest of the review is the long version.

Most sign-up screens feel like a waiting room before the actual appointment. An app that skipped every gate and just handed me a character mid-sentence felt like walking into a diner where the menu is already on the table. My first reaction was suspicion, my second was to keep talking.

How sign-up looks today

Today there is no first night to have. No account can be created. Logging in is not possible either, because the site is closed and redirected.

No e-mails were sent or received from the service during the status check, so there is no welcome mail, reset link or closing notice in anyone's inbox to point to.

I'd call the old flow the best part of the product and a quiet risk at the same time. With no account, there was never an obvious place for a closing notice to land or a balance to be tied to a person. That is my reading rather than a documented fact, but it fits how quietly the whole thing ended.

I like the idea of a feed of trending chats more than a feed of trending characters. A character card is a pitch; a chat is proof of what the character does once someone starts talking. In video terms, it is the difference between a poster and a trailer, and I'd trust the trailer every time.

The catch with any trending feed is that it rewards whatever gets clicks that week, so the loudest scenarios float up and the quieter, stranger characters sink. I'd use a feed like that for ideas, not as the only way to find a character.

For a reader coming from a closed app, the useful lesson is simple. A library you can't export is a library you only rent, and the "Stories" feed went the same way as everything else when the address started pointing at a games portal.

That is a generous toolkit for a free-first chat app. Looks and voices cover the surface, backstories cover the setup, and sliders are a quick way to push a character toward sarcastic or sweet without writing a paragraph of instructions. I think sliders are underrated: they are to character writing what a colour wheel is to grading, fast and good enough for most shots.

None of this can be checked now. The creator lives behind the same redirect as the rest of the product, and any character built there went with the service. I'd count that as the biggest loss for people who put real hours into building their own cast.

I did not expect a fictional lighthouse keeper to understand my job better than some clients do. A lighthouse and an export queue have more in common than they should: a long night, one light to watch, and nothing to do if it goes wrong except wait. But watching a progress bar at night is a lonely little ritual, and he treated it like a fellow keeper's watch.

His sarcasm had the right dryness for it: never cruel, just unimpressed with the sea, the weather and me.

The group chat that argued about loneliness

Group chats were chaos in the best way. I put the lighthouse keeper, a space marine and a Victorian ghost in one room and they spent twenty messages arguing about who had the loneliest job. It played like a stage farce with three leads and no director, and I was happy to sit in the back row.

I didn't enter the video editor. Partly because I was enjoying the show, and partly because I suspected I would have won, which says more about me than it does about the app. In editing terms it was an ensemble scene with no director, and it still cut together better than some real ones.

Historically, users could chat with multiple AIs at once, and the service offered group chats. I think that feature was the most distinctive thing about the product. Plenty of apps give you one partner; very few made a room full of characters feel this easy.

What the replies were like

The keeper stayed the keeper, and the group scene held three very different voices at once, which is most of what I ask from character chat. For a free-first app that is a decent bar, and I think the tone was the product's real strength.

The weakness showed up with length, and the memory section covers that in detail. Short scenes were the sweet spot. Long threads were where the characters started to repeat themselves and the app started to wobble.

The last conversation

I screenshotted my last lighthouse conversation before it went read-only. The final line was 'the light stays on, even when nobody's watching', which felt a bit too on the nose. If a screenwriter handed me that line for a closing shot, I'd have asked for a rewrite, and then used it anyway.

That screenshot is the only piece of the conversations I still have. No hands-on chat is possible today because there is no live service. So the quality described here is history, and nobody can reproduce it now.

My verdict on the chat itself: good, warm in a dry way, and at its best in small scenes and group rooms. It was never deep enough to replace a companion that remembers your life, and it never claimed to be.

On paper there was a tool for this. Historically, the service offered "Memory Cards". The name suggests a place to pin facts so a character keeps them in view, which is the standard fix for exactly this kind of drift.

How well those cards worked is not something the record shows, and the feature can't be checked today. I'd guess they helped with facts and did less for repetition, since looping is more about how the model writes than about what it remembers. That is a guess, and I'd label it as one.

For readers comparing apps, the lesson is the same as with any cheap chat service. Keep scenes short and restart a thread once a character finds a catchphrase.

My score for memory is low for that reason. The conversations were good in the first stretch and wore thin in the same way every time.

Voice messages were fun for about a week, until my character's accent drifted from Maine to vaguely Australian. Drift is the first thing I hear, the same way a lip-sync offset jumps out of a cut that everyone else calls fine. A lighthouse keeper from Maine should not end his watch sounding like he runs a surf shop.

The drift was the audio version of the looping in the chat. The voice started strong and slowly lost its anchor, as if nobody had pinned down who this person was supposed to be. After that week, I read the keeper instead of listening to him, and I think the character was better for it.

None of it can be checked today. The image tool and the voice feature went with the service, and no live comparison is possible.

What free was good for, in my view: short scenes with a favourite character, group rooms, and seeing whether the app's tone suited you. Where it stopped was anything visual or anything flagged as mature, which moved onto credits. That line was clear enough, and I'd rather have a clear line than a fuzzy one.

Today there is no free tier to use. The address redirects to a games portal, and the table below describes how the split used to look, not an offer you can take. If a future app copies this model, I'd use the free chat for weeks before spending a cent, because a free tier this generous is the real test of whether the paid part is worth it.

That single purchase was the whole of my spending, and I think it was the right size of test. It told me the image side was not ready to carry a subscription, and it kept my exposure small when the service later closed. Small tests are cheap lessons; big plans are expensive ones, and nobody gets a refund on a lesson.

What the plans cost on 23 September 2026

Pricing cannot be verified live. The /pricing path redirects to the games portal like everything else, so there is no plan page to read and no price to compare against. The table below reflects that: there are no current plans, only the old ones on record.

The techraisal.com review reports a Pro tier at $19.99 a month. That matches the figure in my memory, so the two sources agree on the headline price. What Pro added beyond more credits and features is not something the record spells out.

Was the step up worth it?

In hindsight, no. Paying $19.99 a month for an app that went read-only and closed in June 2026 would have been money spent on a service with an expiry date nobody announced in advance. Even without the closure, I'd not have paid that for a product whose images gave me two moons and whose characters looped after a long night.

If an app like this comes back under another name, my rule would be the one I followed here by luck: one small pack, one test, and no subscription until the thing has proven itself for months.

The nudging was not aggressive, but it was constant, and I noticed it more the longer I stayed. A coin icon in the corner of a chat window is small, and it still changes how the room feels. It turns a conversation into a place where something is always for sale.

Even when I ignored it, I knew it was there, like a vending machine humming in the corner of a quiet room.

How the credit system worked

The techraisal.com review describes a credit-based system for premium features such as image generation and mature content. That matches the split between free chat and paid extras described above. A May 2026 review complained that the credit system required more and more credits.

I read that as the usual creep in coin economies: the price of the thing you want goes up, or the thing you want gets split into more steps.

What happened to credits at the end

A third-party review reports that credits could no longer be bought at the shutdown. The same review reports that credit balances showed zero at the shutdown. That fits my own ending: the credits simply stopped working, and the balance I had left went with them.

I think this is the part of the story that matters most for anyone reading about a closed app. A credit is only worth something while the service that issued it exists, and nobody offered a refund or an export that I know of. I'd treat any coin balance on any companion app as spent money the moment it lands, not as savings.

If a future app built like Wsup AI offers a welcome pack, I'd buy the smallest one, spend it the same week, and let the timer run out on the rest. The smallest pack is a test; anything bigger is a bet on the company.

Content settings cannot be tested today. The whole product sits behind the redirect, so this section is a record of how things were described rather than a live check.

What the record says

The App Store listing marks the app as adults only. A review reports that Wsup AI NSFW content was credit-gated, which matches the free and paid split in the cost section. I think that is a reasonable design, as long as the gate is labelled clearly.

An Apr 2026 App Store review says the app could not set age, so fewer characters were visible than in the browser version.

Phone app and browser

I did my chatting where the filter stayed light, and it never got in the way of a lighthouse scene. The phone app showing a smaller cast than the browser is a different kind of gap: fewer doors, not a stricter doorman.

For a reader picking a replacement, I'd take one lesson from this. Check which characters the version you will actually use shows, phone or browser, because the same service can offer a smaller cast in one than in the other.

Who ran it

The App Store lists the developer as "game.tv". Google Play lists the developer as "game-tv". Press coverage names the developer as Game.tv Inc., describing wsup.ai as "an artificial intelligence character chat platform developed by Game.tv Inc."

The developer belongs to the same ecosystem as now.gg. That explains the redirect: the old address points to the owner's other business rather than to a closing notice. I think a company that owns both the product and the landing page had every chance to leave a clear explanation there, and chose a games portal instead.

From a reader's point of view, the practical meaning is simple: any question about old data or old purchases goes to game.tv, not to a separate Wsup AI company.

What data the app collected

The App Store privacy label lists data used to track the user. The same label lists collected data including e-mail, user content, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics and coarse location. For a chat app, "user content" means your conversations, and I'd assume every character chat sat on a server somewhere.

Google Play Data safety states that the app collects location, personal info and 4 other data types. It also states "No data shared with third parties". Data is encrypted in transit, according to the same listing.

Refunds, renewal rules, content ownership and dispute terms are all behind the dead /terms path, so there is nothing to explain there. In plain English: the rules that governed your chats and your credits are not public any more, and there is no page to check what happened to either.

My advice for any small companion app: read the terms while they are still online, and save a copy if you plan to spend money. A privacy promise you can't reread after a shutdown is a promise you can't hold anyone to.

It was the chat version of an editing timeline losing its cache: everything you built is technically there, but you are back at frame one watching the intro again. The lesson I took from it was to keep threads short, which is a workaround, not a fix. Put that next to the looping lines in the memory section and the pattern is clear: the app was at its best in short visits.

The bigger friction: a shutdown with no signpost

The glitches were small next to how the ending looks today. The now.gg page that the redirect lands on shows no shutdown notice. The now.gg homepage contains no mention of Wsup AI, wsup.ai, or any closure or merger notice.

The redirect target offers no character list, no login and no path back into the product.

The old now.gg listing page still exists but shows only a generic "Launch in Browser" shell. No social links are reachable because the site redirects. The redirect offers no data-export information either.

Store listings that outlived the app

The App Store and Google Play listings are still online as of 2026-09-23. The Android listing still shows an Install button. The store apps remain listed but the backend is shut down, with the App Store's "Final update" as the last word.

Stale store listings may mislead users into installing a dead app. I'd go further: a live Install button on a closed service is a small dark pattern, even if nobody meant it that way. It invites a download and a first launch that can only fail.

Somebody who reads an old list of recommendations, searches the store and taps Install has done everything right and still ends up with a dead app on the phone.

The archive does not help either

Wayback Machine CDX shows captures through 2026-06-15, but the snapshots do not render or load in a browser. So even the usual way to see what a closed site looked like comes back empty. For a former user, that means no public copy of the old pages, the old prices or the old terms to point to.

I find that the most editor-like complaint in this review: the footage exists somewhere, and none of it will play.

If you still have the app installed, my suggestion is to delete it, since there is nothing behind it now. And if you are thinking of installing it after reading an old list of recommendations, don't.

It never suited people who wanted a partner that remembers their life over months, or anyone who wanted polished images and stable voices.

Today, it suits no one. The listings are still up and the name is being reused, which is exactly why this section exists: nobody should arrive at Wsup AI thinking it is a live option.

On data, there is one thread to pull. Google Play Data safety states that data deletion can be requested. That statement is still on the listing, even though the service behind it is gone, and the redirect gives no contact route or form.

I'd still send a deletion request through the store listing's developer contact if you used the app, on the principle that asking costs nothing.

On money, the honest answer is that credits went with the closure. The cost section has the details, and I know of no refund route.

What to do before paying for any similar app, in my view:

• Buy the smallest pack or plan first and use it within the week.
• Save the terms page and the pricing page as files on the day you pay.
• Keep screenshots of conversations you care about, because nothing exports after a shutdown.
• Check how the app handles deletion before you put personal details into it.

The rest are the tips I'd give my past self, built on how the four months went.

• Spend credits as soon as you buy them. A balance is only worth something while the service exists, and small apps can close with little warning.
• Keep the backstories you write in a file you own. A custom character is gone the moment the creator goes, but a text file can be pasted into the next app.
• Screenshot the conversations that matter. It takes seconds, and it may be the only thing you keep.
• Restart long threads before they fall apart. Short scenes were where this app was at its best, and the same is true of most cheap chat apps.
• Judge images and voices on the fifth try, not the first. Consistency is the real test, and a spare moon in the sky is a fair warning.
• Do not install from a store listing without checking that the service is still running. A live Install button is not proof of life.

Following the first tip from the start would have cost this review one wry line. I'd take that trade.

Conversation quality gets a good rating. The characters were witty and stayed in role, and the group rooms were the most original thing about the product. Memory rates weak, because characters repeated their lines after long stretches and long threads could reset.

The free tier rates well: basic chat cost nothing and needed no account, which is as generous as a chat app gets. Value for money rates weak, because credits bought shaky images and vanished at the shutdown.

Cancelling and billing rate weak on the strength of the ending: no refund route, no export and no notice on the landing page. Content settings sit in the middle, lighter than most for some users and jumpier for others depending on the device.

Put together, the scores describe a pleasant, cheap place that did not look after its customers when it closed.

The name-alike at wsupai.app

An independent site called "WSUP AI" at https://wsupai.app/ launched on 29 Jul 2026. The launch was announced in a paid Marketers Media press release. The press release names a spokesperson, "Maya Kim". It was also published at https://pr.washingtoncitypaper.com/article/WSUP-AI-Launches-Independent-Character-Chat-Replacement-Following-wsupai-Closure/6a6a35e88acc790002edcf1d.

wsupai.app states that it is "independently operated and is not affiliated with the former wsup.ai service or its owners". Old wsup.ai accounts, purchases, characters and chat histories did not transfer to wsupai.app. In short, wsupai.app is a name-alike, not a continuation of wsup.ai.

I think a new product borrowing a closed product's name, weeks after it closed, deserves some caution. It may be a decent chat site, but it is not the diner you remember, and it has no claim on your old credits or characters. I'd judge it from scratch like any other new app, and I'd be slower to pay there than almost anywhere else.

If what you liked was quick character chat with a big cast, Character.AI and Janitor AI are the closer match, and both have a free tier, so either works as a free Wsup AI alternative. They are the names I'd try first for the tap-a-character-and-talk kind of evening. If group scenes were your favourite part, check each app's current group features before you commit, because that was the rarest thing Wsup AI did.

If you wanted something more like a steady companion, closer to a Wsup AI girlfriend than a cast of characters, Replika is the name on that list I'd look at first. It is a different product with a different price logic, and I'd only move there if the lighthouse-keeper kind of scene was never the point for you.

Where Wsup AI was better and worse

Better: the instant start and effortless group rooms. Worse: memory, media consistency and, as it turned out, staying open.
