ChatFAI Review: Famous Characters, One Polite Voice

My experiment lasted twelve days in August 2023. The famous faces are the bait, and the product underneath is a pretty generic chatbot. I went in for a celebrity chef and came out with a polite call-centre voice wearing his name tag, which says more about my expectations than about the app.

The site is live at https://chatfai.com/. Based on the public page, the catalogue covers characters from fiction, film and TV, history and religion, plus real people. It also carries utility bots such as the Librarian, an RPG world and an ethical-dilemma game.

The public page presents a mobile app as well. Other sources disagree on whether that app exists, so I'd treat it as a claim until it turns up in your own app store.

So who is it for? A fan who wants a short, casual chat with a known character for the novelty, and who won't mind that character going soft after a few messages. I'd skip it if you want a companion who remembers you, and paying before the live pricing page can be read by a normal human makes no sense to me.

The scene I remember best is a wedding venue. I'd be standing around waiting for golden hour, typing to Abraham Lincoln on a tiny browser tab while the sky took its time.

Anyone who has shot a wedding knows that stretch of the day. The couple is off somewhere, the light is not ready, and the editor stands near the gear pretending to check cards. I filled that gap with a president in a browser tab, which is not the most professional use of dead time, but it beat reorganising my lens caps.

I think the phone-and-browser setup shaped the whole experience more than any single feature did. A chat app that lives in a tab gets closed with the tab, and a character you only visit between shots never becomes a habit. That suited a novelty app, and it also meant the novelty had no help from the phone.

What the platform looks like today

The facts written in the present tense in this review were checked on 23 September 2026, on the web version and without an account. The record still lists web as the only platform.

An iTunes search for "chatfai" returns no ChatFAI or Glaxosoft app. A reviewer dated 2026-03-23 puts it in three words: "No mobile app."

The public page itself hints otherwise, and that mess gets its own part in the friction section. My practical reading is simple: if you want ChatFAI on a phone, plan on a browser tab, the same as it was for me.

The table under this section sums up my time with it: the period, the plan, the device and how it ended. The stories behind each line are spread through the sections that follow, where they belong.

On a first visit, the Discover page loads. That is the good news, and it is where the good news mostly stops.

What the sign-up looks like on 23 September 2026

Sign-up and login are blocked by a Cloudflare Turnstile checkbox that reads "Verify you are human", and the check was not attempted. The Turnstile blocks access before the login and sign-up screen is even reached. No account was created.

Because the check sits in front of the form, the sign-up methods on offer, whether e-mail or social logins, could not be seen. In plain terms, nobody can tell you from the outside whether ChatFAI wants a Google login, an Apple login or a plain e-mail and password.

I think that is a poor way to greet a new user. A human checkbox is normal on a login page, but here it sits in front of the login page, like a bouncer who stands outside the car park rather than the club.

My advice for the first night

Open the site in a plain, up-to-date browser on a home connection, and give the check a moment before assuming the site is down. If it still refuses you, I'd take that as the answer rather than fighting it.

I'd also skip creating an account until you have chatted as a guest and decided the characters are worth it. The first night is where ChatFAI makes its best impression, and it is also the cheapest time to walk away.

Three Walter Whites is the whole catalogue in miniature. It is generous, it is repetitive, and nobody seems to be checking for duplicates, like a flea market where three stalls sell the same lamp.

I remember enjoying the scroll more than I expected to. For a few minutes it felt like a costume department, and choosing who to talk to was half the fun.

What the Discover page shows today

The page title is "ChatFAI - Discover AI Characters". Only the public Discover page could be viewed on 23 September 2026, so everything below comes from that one page.

The Discover page has category tabs for All, Voice, AI Assistance, Anime / Manga, Book, Cartoon, Comic, Education, Game, History, Other, Real Person, Religion and TV Shows & Movies. It is split into four sections: Featured, Popular, Discover and Recent. Each section has a "Load More" button, which tells you the list goes on well past the first screen.

The Featured row

The Featured row is less celebrity-heavy than the pitch suggests. "Your Therapist" has 85K chats, and "Mom" has 73K chats. A roleplay bot built on a popular anime series has 49K chats.

The classics are there too: Kurisu Makise, Sherlock Holmes, Socrates and William Shakespeare. The featured "ChatFAI Librarian" bot writes character bios, and the row also includes "RPG Game World" and "Ethical Dilemma Game".

I read the chat counts as the honest part of the page. The two most-used featured bots are a therapist and a mother, not a president or a detective, which says a lot about what people actually come for.

The Popular row

The Popular row leans in a different direction. It holds a bot of a real, well-known streamer, anime characters such as Raiden Ei and Tsunade, and user bots such as "Weight Gain Story..." and a hypnosis-themed girlfriend.

I'd call that a fair picture of a user-built library: the famous names draw people in, and the popular list shows where they drift once inside. If you came for Socrates, expect to scroll past a lot of other people's hobbies first.

I took that offer. I made a custom character of my old film-school editing teacher, Deb, from memory. She was the best part of the whole twelve days.

I gave her three catchphrases, and she used all three constantly, which was honestly accurate. The real Deb repeated herself the way a good editor recuts the same scene: on purpose, until you finally got the point.

I think that is the most useful thing I learned about ChatFAI. The famous characters were thin because the app was guessing at them, while Deb worked because I wrote the notes myself, and a bot that repeats three lines is a fair copy of a teacher who repeated three lines.

The archived billing-page code enables custom characters on all paid tiers. It caps the lowest paid tier at 20 characters and makes the number unlimited on Premium and Deluxe.

Twenty characters is plenty for anyone who is not running a small theatre company. I'd rather see the effort go into the bio, because the bio is where the character lives or dies.

By message six he was apologizing and asking how my day was. Gordon Ramsay, apologizing. The illusion broke hard, and it broke in the one direction the character should never go.

In editing terms, it was a continuity error. The first shots establish a shouting chef, and a few cuts later the same man is a supportive friend with no scene in between to explain it. An audience forgives many things, but it does not forgive a character who changes without a reason.

The blending problem

It got worse over time. Characters slowly blended together. By day eight Napoleon and Sherlock talked in the same polite, supportive customer-service voice.

I remember reading a reply and not being able to tell which tab I was in without checking the name. Two of the most distinctive voices in history and fiction had been colour-graded to the same flat look.

That was the moment the app stopped being fun for me. A character hub that sells distinct voices has one job, and by the second week I was talking to one voice in several costumes.

What other reviewers report in 2026

No chat was tested on 23 September 2026, so the current picture comes from other reviewers.

That matches my Ramsay evening closely. A character opens in costume and then slides into the same bland, agreeable sentences over a long, friendly chat. A drift like that is easy to miss in a quick demo, which is why I'd test any character well past its opening lines before trusting it with a whole evening.

The tools around the chat

A reviewer reports that messages can be edited, copied and regenerated in place, with a counter to switch between generations. Regenerating is the closest thing to a second take, and I'd use it early, before a character drifts, rather than late.

Group chat is not documented in the record. I would not buy ChatFAI hoping to put Napoleon and Sherlock in one room.

My overall take: the first few messages are the product. After that, the conversation depends on how hard you work to keep the character on its marks, and the app did not seem to be helping. Nobody should have to direct their own chatbot through every scene just to keep a famous voice sounding like itself.

The first time, I answered politely. By the third, I was explaining my job to a portrait of Lincoln on a phone screen the way I explain colour grading to a client's uncle at a reception, slowly and with diminishing hope.

It is a small thing, but memory is what makes a chat feel like a relationship instead of a queue. A character who forgets your job within five messages is not a companion; it is a very well-read receptionist.

What the plans promise today

The archived billing-page code lists memory capacity as "limited" on the lowest paid tier and "unlimited" on Premium and Deluxe. It does not say what "limited" means in messages or words, which makes the difference hard to price.

I can't tell you whether "unlimited" memory on the upper tiers changes this in practice. I'd want to see a character remember a job title before paying extra for a promise with no numbers behind it.

My tip: if a detail matters, put it in the character's bio or your opening message, and repeat it when the character slips.

The archived billing-page code lists voice messages as "Yearly plan only" on the lowest paid tier, and includes them on Premium and Deluxe. In practice, the cheapest way into voice is a year's commitment, which is a gym-membership move for a feature most people will try twice.

Not everyone agrees voice exists at all. A reviewer dated 2026-03-23 says, flatly, "No voice features." With a Voice tab on the page and a voice line in the billing code, I'd read that as a reviewer who stayed on the free tier, but it is a reminder that nothing here was confirmed live.

Images and video

Images are simpler. Two reviewers, dated 2026-03-23 and 2026-08-21, report no image generation on the platform. The 2026-08-21 reviewer goes further and reports "no images and no video anywhere on the platform".

As a video editor, I don't mind that. An app that does one thing is easier to judge than one that bolts on a picture generator with melting hands, and ChatFAI never pretended to be a studio.

My verdict on media: this is a text app with an optional voice add-on. If voice is the reason you are here, confirm what the tier you want includes before paying, because the yearly-only detail on the lowest tier is easy to miss.

That night deserves a little context. I had made risotto, I was proud of it in the way only a home cook is proud of risotto, and I wanted a famous chef to be angry about it. He obliged for a while, and I kept poking, and by bedtime half the month's allowance was gone on one plate of rice.

I think that tells you how the free tier really works. A monthly cap looks generous on paper, but a single good argument eats it, like a gift card spent in one trip to the diner.

What free gets you in 2026

A reviewer reports that guest chat without an account is possible. That is the right way to try the app: talk to a couple of characters as a guest before handing over an e-mail address.

Not everything is free. A reviewer reports that adult content, voice replies and the full character builder all need a paid subscription. The table below lays out the split between free and paid.

My view: the free tier is enough to learn whether a famous character holds its voice past the first few messages. That is the only question worth answering before paying, and the free tier answers it well.

What the plans cost on 23 September 2026

Nobody can quote a current price with confidence. The pricing page sits behind the Cloudflare challenge and returns HTTP 403 to plain requests, so current prices could not be read. The record holds no verified current plan prices.

What the record does hold is the archived billing-page code. It gives the lowest paid tier 1,500 messages a month, the same allowance as the Basic plan in my story above. Premium gets 5,000 messages a month, and Deluxe gets unlimited messages.

The prices come from secondary sources, and they disagree. A reviewer dated 2026-03-23 lists Premium at $5.99 a month with unlimited messages. A comparison dated 2026-02-02 lists ChatFAI at $5.99 a month or $47.99 a year.

A pricing guide dated 2026-03-27 from the same site puts Premium at around $9.99 a month. An unverified web summary lists the Basic plan from $9 a month. Another lists the Deluxe plan at $49.17 a month or $590 a year.

How I read the mess

Those numbers do not fit together. Premium at $5.99 would be cheaper than Basic at $9, which is backwards, and "unlimited" Premium clashes with the 5,000-message cap in the billing code.

The Deluxe pair is telling. Twelve months at $49.17 comes to about $590, so that "monthly" figure looks like the yearly price divided by twelve rather than a real monthly option.

The $47.99 yearly figure against $5.99 a month is about a third off. That is a reasonable discount on paper, but I would never commit a year to an app I can't see the pricing page of.

Is the step up worth it?

For me, the Basic plan was not. More messages did not buy better conversations, and memory was the real problem, which the lowest tier lists as "limited".

Extra message credits cost $7 per 1,000 messages, with a minimum purchase of 1,000 messages, per the archived billing page from 2025. The price is worked out as the quantity divided by a thousand, rounded up, times $7.

That rounding matters. Asking for one message over a thousand is billed as a second full pack, so buy in round thousands or not at all.

The archived billing page adds: "You can buy messages to use with your current plan. Messages never expire. No subscription required." Credits that never expire are the friendliest part of the whole price list, the opposite of a gift card that dies at the end of the year.

ChatFAI also has an API, and API requests draw on the same message credits. That is useful for a developer and irrelevant for most people chatting with Napoleon.

My take: at $7 per 1,000, a top-up is the sensible way to buy more messages without a subscription. I'd still spend the first money on a single month, because credits only help if the conversations are worth continuing.

The banner was still running on 23 September 2026. That is more than a month before Halloween, so the banner may be a leftover from an earlier season.

What the HALLOW40 code applies to, and when it expires, could not be checked. The pricing page it links to sits behind the same bot check as everything else.

Earlier sales

It is not the first seasonal banner. An archived homepage capture from 2026-04-20 showed an earlier "Spring Sale 20% OFF! promo-code: SPR20" banner, which is not current.

I read that pattern the way I read a used-car lot with a permanent "Sale ends Sunday" sign. A recurring discount is fine, but it tells you the list price is not the price anyone is meant to pay.

Other bonuses

No other bonuses were seen, since no account was created. The archived billing-page code mentions "free message credits by referring your friends". It does not say how many credits a referral earns.

My advice: if the Halloween code works at checkout, take the discount on a single month and nothing longer. A code that may be a season out of date is a nice surprise when it works, not a reason to commit to a year.

I'd also ignore the referral offer unless a friend is going to sign up anyway. Nobody should recruit their friends for an unknown number of message credits.

What the settings look like today

The content settings could not be reached on 23 September 2026. So my friend's complaints about a strict, shifting filter remain the latest first-hand report on it.

What the public catalogue shows

The Popular section includes fetish-leaning user bots, such as "Weight Gain Story" and a hypnosis-themed girlfriend. It also includes a bot of a real, well-known streamer.

Two cards are built on an anime series whose main cast are characters who are not adults in their source material. One card in the Recent row carries a label that places its character in the same kind of setting.

I think that mix is a moderation problem. A catalogue that sits a real person and characters like that next to fetish bots on the same public page is not being watched closely, and a paywall on one kind of chat does not fix what the page itself shows.

My advice: treat the library as user-built and lightly checked. Pick characters you know, and report anything that crosses the platform's own rules.

That leaves a gap I don't like. Terms you cannot read before paying are like a contract the client emails after the shoot.

Who runs it

The operator is Glaxosoft LLC; the archived privacy policy says Glaxosoft LLC operates the https://chatfai.com website. The operator's country is not stated. An LLC with no stated country gives you a name to search and not much else.

What the privacy policy says

The privacy policy says personal data is kept "only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy." That is the standard wording, and it commits to no actual period.

What the front page promises

The Discover page says "100% Private". It also says "Secure and Private Conversations ... All conversations are stored securely".

Stored securely is still stored. A slogan on a landing page is not the same as a policy you can read, and here the policy is the thing you cannot reach.

My advice: write nothing into ChatFAI you would mind a stranger reading. Keep real names and work details out of chats and bios.

The loading overlay

A Quasar loading spinner and backdrop, the q-loading__backdrop layer, stays over the Discover page and never clears. The overlay never cleared on the first load on 23 September 2026. The hamburger menu does not open before the overlay blocks the page.

In editing terms, it is a render bar that never finishes. You can see the timeline under it and you cannot touch any of it.

The Cloudflare wall

After that, every request, whether to the login page, the sign-up page, the register page or a reload of the home page, hits a Cloudflare "Performing security verification" page. The page does not clear on its own after more than 30 seconds.

It then shows a Turnstile "Verify you are human" checkbox, which was not clicked. After the first load, the Turnstile blocked the whole site, including the home page on reload. Site-specific exploration was not possible because of the bot check.

Plain requests to the pricing, terms and privacy pages all return HTTP 403. The FAQ, refund policy and about pages also return HTTP 403 with a Cloudflare "Just a moment..." challenge.

I understand why a site wants a bot check. I don't understand putting the refund policy behind one, because the people who need it most are the people deciding whether to pay.

The Discover page shows no footer. It also shows no Discord, X or Reddit links.

My advice: if the overlay or the checkbox stops you, try once in a clean browser and then let it go. An app that is this hard to open is telling you something about how hard it will be to cancel.

That fits my own twelve days. The best moments were the first messages with a famous name and a character of my own making, and the worst were the long chats where everyone started sounding the same.

Who ChatFAI is not for is unverified. My opinion fills the gap: I'd steer away anyone who wants long memory, a relationship that builds over weeks, or a clear price before paying.

One group is clear. It is not for anyone whose network gets a Cloudflare challenge: on 23 September 2026 the challenge blocked the whole site on the first visit. If your connection runs through a VPN or a strict privacy setup, expect the same wall.

The leftover is a screenshot. The Ramsay screenshot where he calls my risotto 'lovely, darling' is still pinned in my D&D group chat. It is the most value anyone got out of my subscription, and none of it was mine.

How cancelling works today

The archived pricing page says "You can cancel or downgrade your subscription at any time." Subscriptions are managed through a Stripe customer portal, per the archived billing code. Payment is by card through Stripe checkout.

A Stripe portal is one of the better cancel paths in this business. It is a standard page with a clear button, not a chat with a retention bot.

The card statement descriptor, the renewal terms and the refund policy are not documented. That means you cannot check in advance what the charge will look like on your bank statement, when it renews or whether you can get money back.

What to do before paying

Before paying, find the subscription page and the cancel button, and make sure you can reach them through the bot check. Take a screenshot of the price at checkout, because the live pricing page is the one thing nobody else can confirm for you.

Build your own character early. My best time on ChatFAI was with Deb, my old editing teacher, because I wrote her habits myself. A character with a few specific catchphrases beats a famous name the app has to guess at.

Put the details that matter in the bio. Lincoln forgot my job within a few messages, so anything you want remembered should live where the app reads it every time.

Pay for one month at most, and only at the price the checkout screen shows. The published prices disagree with each other, and the pricing page sits behind a bot check.

If you want more messages without a subscription, a credit top-up in round thousands is the tidier choice. Those credits never expire.

Keep private details out of the chats. The privacy page is hard to reach, and a promise of privacy on a landing page is not a policy.

The free tier is decent for what it needs to do. Guest chat and the free messages are enough to find out whether the characters hold up.

Value for money is hard to judge, because the prices on record contradict each other and the live pricing page is blocked. Credits that never expire help.

Images and voice score low. There are no images or video, and voice is a message add-on that is yearly-only on the cheapest tier.

Privacy and terms are weak, mostly because the terms cannot be read and the policy commits to little.

Cancelling through Stripe is a good sign, but the missing refund and renewal details keep it from scoring higher. Content settings are mixed: adult chat is paywalled, and the public catalogue is lightly moderated.

Where ChatFAI does better is breadth and novelty. No companion app lets you argue with a celebrity chef, question a president and write your old teacher into existence in the same week, and that variety is real.

Where it does worse is everything that makes a chat last. Memory, consistent character voice and clear pricing all matter more after the first week, and ChatFAI was weakest exactly there.

All three of the other apps have a free tier on record, as ChatFAI does, so the free tier is not a reason to pick one over another. The deciding question is whether you want many short conversations or one long one.

My recommendation: use ChatFAI as a novelty on the free tier, and spend real money on an app built around a single companion if that is what you want.

What stays with me is the part the app did not make. Deb worked because I remembered her, and the Ramsay screenshot still gets a laugh because a friend group gave it one.

That feels like the right summary for a character hub. The characters are only as good as the person writing them, and the app mostly supplies the stage.

Decide which of the two you want before the first upgrade screen, and the choice gets much easier.

If you go in knowing that, ChatFAI can be a pleasant evening. If you go in hoping for the real Gordon Ramsay, keep your risotto recipe to yourself.
